EXPRESS E-MAIL:
The fastest way to create an e-mail message to recipients you regularly contact is to use
shortcuts than open a new message addressed to a specific person. Right-click on the
background of the Desktop or any folder and choose New/Shortcut. In the Command Line type mailto:[email protected],
inserting the appropriate e-mail address after mailto. Whenever you want to send that
person a message, just double click on the shortcut and Windows will launch a preformatted
message in your e-mail client. You can even create a folder containing multiple shortcuts
on the Start menu so they'll always be easy to access.
MORE WAYS TO SEND E-MAIL:
Once you've implemented the previous (Express E-Mail,top page) tip, add the shortcuts to
the IE 4.0/Win98 Quick Launch toolbar or to your WINDOWS\SENDTO folder for more ways to
send a message. Adding them to your SENDTO folder will let attach files to a message
simply by selecting them from a window, right-clicking on them, selecting Send To then
choosing the recipient's e-mail shortcut.
MORE SWAP FILE SECRETS:
Last month, we showed you how to optimize your swap file; here are some more ways to
boosts its performance. First, if possible, move any files of your second drive; that
places the swap file at the beginning of the disk and minimizes seek time. Defrag the
drive using full optimization (even if Disk Defragmenter indicates that you don't need to)
to eliminate pockets of free space that could fragment the swap file. Next, right-click on
My Computer, choose Properties, select the Performance tab and click on the Virtual Memory
button. Check the "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings" option. Select
your second drive and set both the minimum and maximum virtual memory sizes to 2.5 times
your installed RAM. ( For example if you have 16MB of RAM, set both the minimum and
maximum sizes to 40MB.
CACHE AS CACHE CAN:
A new feature of Microsoft's Zero Administration initiative for Windows (ZAW) is the
ability to log-in to any computer on a network and have your own personal settings follow
you there. Unfortunately, by default, one thing that follows you is your entire IE4.0
Internet cache. That can cause a massive amount of hard disk copying as your cache is
moved across the network. This may be annoying on LANs, but on Dial-up Networking you'll
be in even bigger trouble. Microsoft has posted a fix for this problem in document Q182310
at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/9182/3/10.asp
IE 4.0 NOT QUITE IN STYLE:
Remember how Internet Explorer 3.0
allowed you to turn off the style sheets (CSS)? Despite its copious configuration dialogs,
IE 4.0 doesn't have that option. It turns out that IE 4.0 will pay attention to the IE3.0
settings-in fact, if you turned off style sheets in IE3.0 and then upgraded to IE4.0,
there's no way to turn style sheets back on!
The fix is to us the Registry Editor. Go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\
Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main, create a string value named Use StyleSheets,
and set the its value to "yes". To turn style sheets off,set the value to
"no". See the Microsoft support site at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/9283/7117.asp,
document 183717, for more information.

This month
issue of Windows User Magazine Middle East - Topic : Windows98 Resource Kit ( it is
included in your Win98 CD)
COOL FREE TOOLS:
The WIn98 CD comes loaded with tools from the Resource Kit sampler. You'll find
their installation files in CD's TOOLS\RESKIT folder. Run SETUP.EXE and the utilities will
be installed in Start/Programs/Windows 98 Resource Kit/Tools Management Console.
LAUNCH APPS FASTER:
The QuickTray tools sits in your system tray and gives you an easy way to put other
applications on your taskbar. Click on QuickTray to launch it, and use the Add button to
add any program. The icon for each program you select will be placed to the right of the
Start button, letting you launch the program at anytime with a single click on the icon.
FIND OUT ABOUT TOOLS:
You can get help with and find out more about Resource Kit tools without even
launching them. Simply right-click on the tool about which you'd like more information,
and select Help.
READ TEXT AND HTML FAST:
A simple but useful utility in the Resource Kit sampler is the Text File Viewer.
It's like a special, dual-pane Explorer windows, but it lets you select a file extension,
then flip through only those files on your system.
By selecting the files in the left pane, you can read the contents on the right.
Note that for HTML files, the Text File Viewer displays the source code, not the page as
it would appear in a browser.
So much for this month issue.
